Toronto Fashion Week (TFW) Day 1 - The Venue & Lucian Matis

Toronto Fashion Week (TFW) Day 1 - The Venue & Lucian Matis

Toronto hasn't been without its share of fashion events in the last year, but one event in particular was noticeably missing after IMG Canada cancelled Toronto Fashion Week last summer. Now, after a little over a year, Toronto Fashion Week is back with a new look and a new location thanks to its new owner Peter Freed, real estate developer and President of Freed Developments. Together with Suzanne Cohon, Fashion, Arts and Cultural Ambassador for TFW and Principal of ASC Public Relations, and Carolyn Quinn, Executive Director for TFW and former fashion director for IMG, Freed brings the newly revived fashion week to Yorkville Village for three days of runway shows, designers in conversation, and an exclusive screening of sartorial documentary Franca: Chaos and Creation.

The Venue - Yorkville Village

Newly located in Yorkville Village, Yorkville Avenue was closed off and tents erected on the street to house the lounge, the runway and the backstage area. This year's set up was interestingly voyeuristic - the lounge and part of the backstage area were tented with clear plastic, giving passersby a view of the attendees and of the models getting their hair and make-up done.

Toronto Fashion Week officially opened with Jean Paul Gaultier in conversation with special guest host Derek Blasberg, followed by the first of only a few Canadian designers to present their collections. Lucian Matis opened the runway with his SS18 collection that featured a wide variety of playful pieces that ranged from edgy to pretty to avant-garde. It was an impressively large collection with sparkly sequin and metallic pieces, stylish yet conservative tweed suits, tailored dresses, and sheer pieces with floral appliqué. There was something for everyone, and you could tell the designer had a lot of fun creating this collection. Here are some of the highlights:

The launch of the new Toronto Fashion Week was a huge success! We even got to catch up with a couple of the creative talents from our #WeWantToKnow series - Whitney Westwood, designer of the Canadian label Whitney Linen, and Rebeca Zavaleta Ulch, brand strategist & content creator at Wishbone & Clover Media.
