TOM*FW - Toronto Men's Fashion Week

TOM*FW - Toronto Men's Fashion Week

TOM*FW (Toronto Men's Fashion Week) took place this week to showcase upcoming Fall/Winter 2017 collections by Canada's top menswear designers. This season's Fall/Winter 2017 collections were shown at the Waterworks at 505 Richmond St W. the former public works facility that is awaiting its redevelopment to becoming part condos and part mixed-use community hub. The vast, empty building was temporarily transformed into a fashion mecca, with separate areas for sponsor exhibits, a VIP lounge, and the runway. You could easily forget where you were; the warehouse vibe was reminiscent of the venues of NYFW. The rooms were decorated with a mix of industrial and luxe decor, making it the perfect venue for both the streetwear styles and tailored suits that were seen on the runway. The event was well-attended equally by both men and women, none of whom failed to disappoint with their outfits, making the down-time between shows as fashionably compelling as the runway shows. Here's a brief highlight of the week's shows.

HELMER

Inspired by the Zazous, Helmer Joseph's FW17 collection captures the inter-war 1940's fashion movement in Paris. The style is characterized by wide-shouldered jackets and waist-pleated pants in checkered fabrics. Especially love the burgundy and cream striped jumpsuit (shown at top left)!

CURTIS OLAND

The FW17 collection from Curtis Oland had a post-apocalyptic feel to me. It felt raw, rough. Rope was used on a lot of the looks, either as belt or as embellishment (even the designer had some rope tied around his wrist when he came out to take a bow).

HIP AND BONE

Hip and Bone designers Carlos Fogelman and Frank Mesh created a hip, comfortable, and casual line of streetwear for fall/winter.

KOLLAR

First I need to shout out the typography of Kollar's logo!! Loved all the knit sweaters, detailed hoodies, and the bib-fronted extra long shirts.

TRISTAN LICUD

Luxe outerwear that makes an impact by Tristan F. Licud.

SHELLI OH

A tailored man is more my style and I was into these looks by Shelli Oh. Looking forward to seeing her women's FW17 collection this weekend.

ZANE BARLAS

Feeling vibes of The City with Zane Barlas' collection. Three-piece suits, bow ties, tuxedos and lots of checkered prints. For a very dapper man. (Oh hi, Paul Mason!)

HENDRIXROE

The Hendrixrow show was so rock n' roll. The music fit perfectly with the looks. Lots of bold-hued metallics and animal prints.

LABELLE

Last but certainly not least, my favourite collection was the luxury coats by Pascal Labelle. I especially loved the blue fur details. This show opened Day 2 and had great energy. Loved the music.

MEN'S FASHION 4 HOPE

Men's Fashion 4 Hope, presented by GOTSTYLE, was the most exciting show to have been witness to. The crowd energetic and enthusiastic to see some of our favourite notables and celebrities walk down the runway for charity. Funds were raised for the Kol Hope Foundation for Children for Sick Kids Hospital. Among those who participated were real estate developer Brad Lamb, HGTV host Scott McGillivray, and politician, lawyer & human rights activist Jagmeet Singh.

For the first time ever, the TOM* organization will be featuring women's collections! Following on the heels of men's fashion week, women's FW17 collections from Canadian designers will be showing at the Waterworks this weekend. Follow us for coverage of these shows too, and/or see you at the runway!
